| Summary, etc. | L'architecture est avant tout un art au service de l'homme. En fait, dépouillé de sa fonction essentielle qui est d'offrir logement et abri, cet art manquerait de raison d'être, faute de contenu. La construction devient un art quand, dépassant sa fonction utilitaire, elle accueille celui qu'elle est chargée d'abriter d'une manière qui traduit l'expression significative propre à son époque et à sa justification. La beauté de l'architecture doit, par conséquent, se rechercher dans la façon dont celle-ci remplit sa fonction. L'architecture, en tant que principale réalisatrice des programmes de l'Islam, constitue un des éléments d'art les plus caractéristiques de cette civilisation. Si elle est unitaire dans ses motivations, elle ne l'est en aucune façon dans ses manifestations, qui s'échelonnent sur plus d'un millénaire et intéressent trois continents riches de traditions artistiques très diverses. |
